Pet Leash Policy Notes
Whatcom County The following was provided to Grateful Dogs for posting on January 30, 2007 with the following note: "Please note that this was last updated in May 2006. We have acquired additional property since then and will be developing additional parks in the future. This policy will likely be revised annually." Whatcom County Parks &
Recreation Pet Leash Policy
May 2006 Update Augments and Clarifies Policy # 2320 Dated August 8, 1967 and Revised March 8, 1972 and June 23, 1981 This has been placed in our policy manual for reference and has been passed on to the office staff who answer calls from the public: Lighthouse: Three areas have been posted where leashes are required: the boardwalk, parking lot and campground. Pets can be off leash but under voice control in other areas. Samish: Pets have to be leashed in the main area of the park but can be off leash under voice control on the trails. Hovander and Tennant Lake: A new map has been generated which shows on leash areas (around all of the more developed areas of the park), off leash areas (south of the boat launch adjacent to the river; and southwest of the Tennant Lake Interpretive Center), and no pet areas (north of the Park Manager’s house extending to park boundary, the north 2/3 of the lake and the boardwalk) Silver Lake: Pets must be on leash throughout the park. Plantation: Pets must be on leash once they enter the gate. Hunters bring dogs to the range so they can become accustomed to the sound. Other Parks and Trails Pets must be on leash at all of our other parks and trails except as described below. Pets will not be allowed at the Stimpson Family Nature Reserve and Canyon Lake Community Forest. Pets can be off leash but must be under voice control at Squires Lake, North Lake Whatcom Park (including Hertz Trail) and the Chuckanut Mountain trails. Note: On June 19, 2003 the Whatcom County Parks & Recreation Commission made a motion to strongly support the above document with the addition of requiring pet owners to pick up and dispose of their pets’ feces. The motion passed unanimously with five of the seven Commissioners present at the meeting. On July 17, 2003 the Commission clarified that “dog” should read “pet” in the above text to be consistent with the original policy. That change is now reflected above. |
