North
Lake Whatcom Park (including Hertz Trail) Off-Leash Areas All trails. Pets can be off leash but must be under voice control. Map & Directions From the Silver Beach area, take North Shore Drive east, around Lake Whatcom, for approx. 20 minutes. You'll be very close to the end of North Shore Drive when you will see a sign on your left for the park. Turn left, and go approximately 1/2 mile. You'll see a large park sign and parking lot on your left. Click Here to see related info from http://maps.google.com. Hike Suggestion You'll see the trail head near the center of the parking lot. Walk for approximately 7 minutes until you reach the Lake. Turn left under the archway/structure. Walk for 20-30 minutes (about 1 mile) until you come to a large waterfall on your left. (You'll hear it.) You'll see a wooden bridge that crosses a stream. Go over the bridge, then take a right onto a beach. This is one of the best places in Bellingham for dogs to retrieve in the water. There are very few boulders or rocks, and the water is relatively shallow. You may want to take the "Chuck-It." There are some really nice long stretches of straight trail along the way on which you can play fetch. However, even without the Chuck-It, your dogs will love jumping into the lake, then jumping back onto the trail to play and chase one another and explore. They'll do this continuously throughout the walk. So, it's potentially a "hilly" course for the dogs, but for you it's an easy flat stroll.
