Little Squalicum Park Master Plan
Final Public Input Meeting
Nov. 12, 2009 7:00 PM
Fireplace Meeting Room (625 Halleck Street, Bellingham, WA)

The City of Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department is conducting the third and final public meeting to obtain input on the master planning of Little Squalicum Park. This meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 12, 2009, at the Fireplace Meeting Room (625 Halleck Street, Bellingham, WA).

Little Squalicum Park is located at 640 Marine Drive, Bellingham. The park is situated near Bellingham Technical College in the outer bounds of the Birchwood Neighborhood.

Three public meetings were scheduled for the design and approval of the park master plan.

The focus during the first public meeting was to determine what the public feels are the qualities of the site, current and potential issues the plan should address, desired recreational/educational opportunities, and new park facilities.  A two-hour open field visit was also conducted.

The second public meeting focused on the public’s evaluation and assessment of the plan alternatives.

The purpose of the third and final public meeting is to obtain the public’s evaluation and comments on the final master plan.

Another element of this project is the ongoing design of two separate environmental cleanups within the site (Oeser & Municipal Landfill). Design work for these cleanups are proceeding coincidentally with master plan development. It is the City’s understanding that the agencies overseeing cleanup activities will host their own public meetings through a separate public process.

Post Point Wastewater Treatment Plant Facility Expansion
Neighborhood Meeting
Thursday, November 5, 2009 7:00 PM
Fairhaven Middle School - Commons

Please join us for a series of neighborhood meetings to discuss the planned expansion of the Post Point Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The City of Bellingham is in the early stages of planning necessary expansion of the WWTP, and will hold four informal public meetings during the planning process to obtain community input.

At our initial meeting on Thursday, October 22, we will discuss the history of the Post Point WWTP project, explain why expansion is needed, and present the project schedule. We will also outline opportunities for the public to provide input and ideas as the project moves forward. A second meeting is planned two weeks later on Thursday, November 5, where we will summarize input received on October 22, and present specific project requirements that will affect the site. Two additional meetings will be held in the first half of 2010, at which updated project plans will be presented based on comments and ideas gathered at the 2009 meetings. We hope you can attend.

Health Alert - Cocoa Mulch

Cocoa Mulch is a nice smelling mulch that is advertised to help keep cats away from garden areas.

However, dogs may be attracted to the smell, and ingesting the mulch can be fatal.

"....studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog)."

Health Alert - Xylitol (in Sugar Free Gum)

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used in candy, chewing gum, chewable vitamins and throat lozenges, and when ingested by dogs  it causes a dangerous surge in insulin. Just 8-10 pieces of gum can kill a 65 pound dog.  2-3 pieces could kill a small dog.
