ALERTS!

July 28, 2010:  Bloedel Donovan Alert!

The Parks Department has requested input on how to solve the problem of turf destruction in some areas of Bloedel Donovan Park each winter -- when the off-leash dog hours are longest.

May 9, 2010:  Post Point Alert!

Lindsay Albin from the Dept. of Ecology sent an ERT alert to public works which was forwarded to Grateful Dogs.  There were several phone complaints about dog feces at Post Point and a formal complaint filed with the DOE.

It is time our members get together to pressure others to clean up after their dogs.  We don't want to lose that site as an off-leash area!

We have been told by city officials that if there are aggressive dogs or owners continuing to break city ordinances after gentle reminders, then the police should be called.

Suggested ways to approach non-compliant dog owners:

"Excuse me, would you like a bag to clean up after your dog?"  (Then offer them one of your bags.  Always keep extras with you.)

"Excuse me, but would you please gain control of your dog.  Aggressive and violent dogs are not permitted in off-leash areas."

If your efforts fail, call the Police:

Health Alert - Cocoa Mulch

Cocoa Mulch is a nice smelling mulch that is advertised to help keep cats away from garden areas.

However, dogs may be attracted to the smell, and ingesting the mulch can be fatal.

"....studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog)."

Health Alert - Xylitol (in Sugar Free Gum)

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used in candy, chewing gum, chewable vitamins and throat lozenges, and when ingested by dogs  it causes a dangerous surge in insulin. Just 8-10 pieces of gum can kill a 65 pound dog.  2-3 pieces could kill a small dog.
